The Art of Trackside Communication

Don’t you think the photo is just so great. What a story it tells!. There are a couple of things we can learn from it. Apart from how long you should dunk the chicken you can also pick up these tips:

Relax: Easier said than done for us lot in the western world but the two gents in the photo are doing what comes naturally to them. They are squatting down where they met up trackside and started to communicate. And this is something IMHO which we are in danger of losing - the art of conversation.

Tip: Shock the hell out of a stranger tomorrow morning at the station or on the underground at Baker St or even in the buffet car on the way home by saying “Hello!”.

Personal Space: They appear to not hold any preconceived ideas about invading personal space. Check the body language. Not a hint of, “Get out of my space” or “I’ve got back2backs so can we grab a latte and rush the agenda”. And what better time to socialise properly and speak face to face with another human than there and then regardless of one’s surroundings, trackside while waiting for the 2:28pm?

Tip: While in conversation with a stranger or someone you see each day but don’t speak to, see how close you can get to this person when you stop and look them in the eye, smile and say “Hello, how are you?”

Err but before mobiles, laptops, Twitter and blogging isn’t this what we used to do? Remember those days?

Technology: Yes, you got it. There is none. And isn’t that just so great? The two are probably holding a far more meaningful conversation than you and I and thousands of other bloggers and tweeters will have today. I wonder if they know what a computer can do? I wonder if they know that a PC can enrich one’s life but at the same time without proper control, it can completely destroy your life from a social perspective?

Tip: Stop twittering. Stop txting. Stop blogging. Start using your vocal chords and hold a decent conversation with someone

How can any technology be good if it is the precursor to the end of realtime conversations between people. Screw twitter, sod IMing & blogging for a while - pick up the phone or better still, go and see the person you want to speak to. Even if it does mean breaking the bank to fly to Sydney. It’ll be an unforgettable event and will provide fantastic memories for decades to come.

Can you remember your last tweet? Who was it to? Oh it wasn’t to anyone was it? It was just a “only 146 characters allowed” monologue?!

Gee, you really enriched someone’s life today.
