Quechup Wake Up

Received an invite to join the newest social network called Quechup. I thought OK I’ll give it a go and luckily for me, after completing the setup form, I hesitated just before hitting the SUBMIT button and Googled the Quechup before continuing to complete the application.

All I see in Google is apologies for the spam that this latest edition to social networking causes. Mailboxes are being filled with spam bounces. Not good. During the sign-up process, Quechup trawls your contact list and spams your friends. This attempt at launching a viral campaign is serious bad news. It’s just plain violation and has to be stopped.

So ignore any Quechup invites you get from me. I apologise if you do get one. It is totally unintentional and was sent without my consent.

Got the same request via Hugh. This is extremely bad form and will probably ensure Quechup die as quickly as they we’re born. I’m no lawyer - but is this practise even legal????

Ben,

Good point. Illegal is what I think it may be but if consent is provided by you during the account setup phase then….?

We shall see.

Yeah, except that consent isn’t given at all - they say they’re going to “check” to see if any of your address book entries have accounts on their system, and then they go ahead and send out invitations without telling you they will do that and certainly without permission. Twitter and facebook and others also have a way to check if your friends/colleagues/etc are on their system, but they don’t auto send anything. This is absolutely not cool.

Supposedly there is something in the fine print somewhere, but I am pretty good about reading the fine print (I’m a lawyer myself, in upstate New York, U.S.A.) and I sure didn’t see anything that said they would auto-send to all your contacts.

Well, I wrote them an email (to privacy@quechup.com) suggesting that they google “quechup” because all they’ll see are complaints. I think they did themselves in, but it still created a big mess for others to clean up. I’m pretty savvy about this kind of thing usually - and I set up a false password for the time they had to check my address book, and then changed it again - but nevertheless had to let my contacts know it was bogus, and it all never should have happened. By the way, I got no response to my email (as if I expected one). Jerks.
