Passion v Dedication

Where does dedication get you? Where does passion let you go?

Much of a muchness aren’t they? I tested the two words out over the previous 24 hours. How? Well here is the story:

As you do, I go to read Hugh’s blog called Gapingvoid for some inspiration when my innovation fuel tank has depleted to about -2.67%. And as per usual, Hugh always has something fresh up on his blog to inspire me and help me to get the go-go juice topped up.

This Friday, the inspiration I found at Gapingvoid was Hugh’s raison d’etre, Stormhoek wine. We all know how Hugh changed the rules about marketing Stormhoek’s wines. He dumped the fuddy-duddy boring and cob-webbed traditional marketing manual and created something special. By using us bloggers, Hugh brought an unknown vineyard called Stormhoek located in the Western Cape region (near Cape Town), South Africa slap bang centrestage of the wine consumer psyche through his deviously clever and very cheeky viral marketing plan.

During this winter past in the UK, Hugh launched the Stormhoek wines, (brand is so passe’, so 2006 darlings) via a nationwide programme that involved the world’s largest wine buying organisation - the UK’s Tesco supermarket chain.

The event was St Valentines day. The aim - to sell a lot of Stormhoek rose’ or the Big Love wine. How? Read Hugh’s story.

Well this time, Hugh set up a promo with a difference. First 6 bloggers to send in a photo of them with a bottle of Pinotage or Sauvignon Blanc, could receive a box (6 bottles) of Stormhoek wine.

Wowzer! That got my juices going. And the rest as they say is a fine tale of a two day driving odyssey across Royal County of Berkshire and Oxfordshire in search of a Tesco store that had some Stormhoek wine in stock.

The point of this missive?

Was it passion or dedication that drove me? Or is it a Namibian thing?

Two days of driving in pursuit of alcohol - sounds like you need rehab.

Mmmm. Depends whether your pursuit was about competition or desire.

And does it really matter? You did it.
