Outrageous S African Wine Bottle Labels

South Africa produces great wines but I can’t see any labels for the bottles that rush off the bottle and grab your attention. They all seem to have fallen into a similar genre.

So I thought you’d like to see a couple of labels that made conversation at the dinner tables a lot more interesting and for those that wanted to be quiet and enjoy the wine in silent contemplation - they had these labels to keep their attention ticking merrily along:

Now this label is brilliant. It explains an African legend about how the Boabab tree got to be upside down in the earth. Brilliant!

The next label is named after Spatz Sperling heard someone comment that the wine “tasted like shit”. He carried on working and made sure the wine he produced was not. But he called the vintage ‘Spatzendreck’ which if you translate it into German, means “Sparrow Shit”! And you can see a little sparrow doing it’s business at the top of the label.

Hi Robert, I dont know if its just me but none of your graphics display in my browser. This seems to be the case for all your blog entries and also nothing shows in the banner. For example for the Baobab label I just get the word “baobab.gif”. If I try to manually view the graphic using the url:

http://iscatterlings.com/wp-content/2006/04/boabab.gif

then I get this message:

You don’t have permission to access /wp-content/2006/04/boabab.gif on this server.

Try again. I am darn sure I know why but want you to try again. I was only getting thumbnails in the browser so overode Wordpresses preset linking html. Deleted the reference to thumbnail.

That is wht the ‘You do not have…’ reference is about.

Try again please. My browser sees them fine.

Hi Rob, there is now a difference but I still dont see the graphics. Instead a get a clickable icon and it takes me to another site. It looks like its a permission problem on the Apache server. That may be why you can see them but noone else.

Regards

Damn. OK I will revert to the standard thumbnail which means the detail of the labels will be lost. But at least the links to Peter’s site will let the visitor see the labels in their glory!

Thanks for letting me know.

Hi Rob

Found your site yesterday for the first time - and I’m really enjoying reading it. Woudl it be OK if I linked to you on my blog? (btw, thanks for linking to me - and I love your “buttonised” blogroll!!) Re. the graphics - I run plain old IE and I saw/see them just fine, both in the large and the thumbnail incarnations.

As for the buttonised blogrol, I first got the idea a couple of months back when I saw the RSS buttons. SO , I just extended the idea to links and in my case, anyone who gets a link here at iScatterlings is ‘honoured’ by having me create the button for them.

And as you know the process of creating these buttons is so …..well … exhausting dahlinks!
