How relevent is Technorati now?
Dave Sifry and his crew developed a ranking site that ruled the roost. Technorati ruled the rankers!
But then along came Google.
Technorati, the big player, again seems to be falling victim to overly ambitious execs and the fickle nature of ranking methodologies and inconsistent quality of service once new developments are allowed to go into production. I think Technorati’s woes will continue through 2008. They may disagree and well they should. Their pedigree and innovation in the pre Google days was right there on the button and Technorati rightfully claimed the title of “King of Ranking Hill”.
And when Google launched their service they snatched away all Technorati’s glory which forced Dave et cie to regroup and make a plan to grab back the supremo slot.
Technorati did it. They were blogosphere’s comeback kids. The glory days returned. Sifry and crew were once more the masters of the ranking universe. Status quo was returned to blogosphere.
Temporarily.
Technorati achieved this revival in status by using Google to their own advantage. Talk about sleeping with the enemy! Clever band-aid fix but shortlived.
Then the pushback began. Google reacted and Technorati’s gain in traffic slipped. Technorati was forced back to the drawingboard again to come up with another plan. And they did. This time they launched with the staple blogs ranking service but added music, videos, podcasts and pictures to their suite. Too ambitious?
Ever since then Technorati has dropped away in terms of its relevence to me as a blogger. Technorati lacks the ability to service a demanding blogosphere. Technorati is cumbersome. Slow. Bad support last year led to many bloggers thinking the rats had deserted the Technorati ship. Spidering our sites never happended for weeks on end. It was sad. Is a relatively poor Technorati able to outwit mega-rich Google?
Can Technorati afford to keep funding much needed improvements to maintain a successful model? Blogosphere has to ask if a still pertinent Technorati can remain relevent to blogosphere now that the ubersearch Google gains more and more subscribers?
I have noticed my authority has dropped again. All that hard work to get into the top 30,000 is all in vain and has to be done again. Such is life in blogosphere. Will Technorati end up a sad sidenote to blogosphere?

I think Technorati should be considered only as one of the last judging factor in a ranking. There are fave trains and domineering site directories that over-shadow measly blogs in Technorati ranks. I personally wouldn’t use it except if I ran a shameless campaign aimed at getting my blog fave’d. But does a good ranking on Technorati automatically grant you a better PR?

Thanks for the comment. You make a valid point about whether you get better PR from a high Technorati rank.
I don’t know about that. But I have only now launched myself into what Google has to offer in terms of SEO and Pagerank etc.
Guess I will have to wait and see if Google does bump traffic up at my site.
