Even the Queen farts

We were taught (well we should still be if not) to respect our parents, all other elders and people in authority. Somehow, it was hardcoded nto our minds during our formative years that all people who held high office of state and in business were to be held in high esteem, respected and knew the answers to all our issues.

Today I was treated to a classic case of, “Hi, I’m a director and I have no people skills at all and I don’t have a clue how or what I need to say to this highly regarded member of Will’s team to make her stay at the company so I’ll just ask her to make me an offer of what she thinks she needs to make me say, you must stay”. The moron I am talking about is my boss.

Apart from not caring that the staff member in question has a job offer on the table, she is also my best direct report who manages a team too. And if I lose her, I will most likely lose the headcount and I can safely say my departments results to date will be setback a year. And yearend is a case of 8 weeks away. So you will understand the need to have a financial package and extra responsibility proposal ready to counter-offer the job on offer.

No such luck.

Let’s also chuck something else into the mix. I am the Line Manager who might lose the staff memebr. Therefore in almost every other business on this planet (yes there will be moronic exceptions), the responsibility to hold meetings with the staff memeber concerned to make the counter-offer should be her immediate Line Manager.

No such luck.

Moron wants the glory. Dubious as that glory might be, my counter-argument and insistance that as her direct boss, I should be left to do this part of my job which I have performed incredibly well over the years and have retained all staff concerned to date, was met with the ’stare of death’ from said moron. I was told to report to his office with ‘her’ at 10:30am today. I prayed last night that a typhoon would spring up really early this morning and destroy the section of the office building where his office is. With him in it of course.

No such luck.

I feel your pain but you could position it as if you went to bat for the counter-offer; and that much against the boss’ better judgement you managed to twist their rubber wrist and get some more quid put on the table.

you could even go as far as stating that you threatened to quit if the person wasn’t retained.

you should be using phrases like i told them a few thousand(100) “semi precious stones” would mean nothing to the company but would mean a GREAT deal to this person…

and so forth and so on - money; guilt; pleading these are tough things to walk away from!
