Johannesburg is known the world over as the city of gold.

It was here, more than a century ago, that the mining magnates forced out of Kimberley by Cecil Rhodes’ muscular consolidation of the diamond fields came, their pockets stuffed with money to fund the deep level mining that would make this country forever synonymous with the yellow metal.

Their successes laid the foundations for Johannesburg to develop into the metropolis that it is today and indeed for those very same mining companies to ultimately become multi-national corporates with diversified business interests spanning the globe.

Gold has lost some of its glister in recent times in this country, due more than anything to a volatile currency and dwindling and difficult resources, but our mines are still being worked, some still within 50 kms of the city itself.

And, not withstanding the metal’s problems in recent years, it is still a critical part of our economy as an earner of foreign exchange, as an employer and as an indirect investor in the economies of the towns in which it operates.
