MAMMA AFRIKA

Oh mamma Afrika, dear mamma Afrika
Before I slip away and leave your embrace
Keep my children from death’s door
For they are the future

Oh mamma Afrika, sweet mamma Afrika
I lie here an inch from my crossing
I see my woman crying and my children dieing
Of starvation and disease I distress to see
Their bloated stomachs, bulging eyes covered in flies
and pin thin llimbs that are too weak to carry their patheticness
with some dignity

Oh mamma Afrika, beautiful mamma Afrika
I will soon see my ancestors who died fat
In the bosom of their family
Surrounded by their cattle and their fields of green
They will ask why should it have been that
I am the lucky one to escape this living hell

Oh mamma Afrika, serene mamma Afrika
I am growing weaker, I am slipping away please save my woman
She has done her best and deserves a rest
From the savage starvation and constant worry

Oh mamma Afrika, blessed mamma Afrika
I have failed her, our children and my people
I ask their forgiveness, I failed as a man
I ask their forgiveness, I was not strong
I ask their forgiveness, I would not learn
I ask their forgiveness, I could not get food
I ask their forgiveness, I could not fight corruption

Oh mamma Afrika, tranquil mamma Afrika
See my tears of pain, they are for my woman, our children, my people
Who ride with me now, these thousands each day
Who have to pay for the corrupt leaders’ way

O mamma Afrika, peaceful mamma Afrika
Hear a dead man’s wish and bring peace to my land
Make the rains return and the men learn
To farm the ground to harvest the food and keep our children
Safe from harm so they can learn and grow strong
And lead our land to a safe and secure future

Oh mamma Afrika I hear you call and I beseech you one last delay as
I need to hold and touch my woman and children one last time
So that I will remember their feel and I must smell the earth of Afrika
to take its memories and history with me now
